Minor success. I can play the file now under totem, but when i seek to
the end, totem crashes. If i try to generate a valgrind.log it crashes
after showing the first frame (see attached log). The log looks very
similar to the previous one, so i think nothing has changed.

Could you try if it works better with this update:
libtheora (0.0.0.alpha7.dfsg-2ubuntu1) feisty; urgency=low
.
* Sync with Debian
* debian/control:
- list libtheora-bin

You
Thanks for your bug report. New packages version have been uploaded
since you opened it, could you try if you still get the issue and attach
a new crash file if that's the case?

[apport] totem crashed with SIGSEGV in
It still crashes. Strangely, apport doesn't come up, so here come cp
debug info:
*** glibc detected *** /usr/bin/totem: double free or corruption (out):
0x007746e0 ***
=== Backtrace: =
/lib/libc.so.6[0x2b1731b7fb33]
/lib/libc.so.6(cfree+0x8c)[0x2b1731b8327c]
(gdb) bt
#0 0x2b1731b40cab in raise () from /lib/libc.so.6
#1 0x2b1731b42660 in abort () from /lib/libc.so.6
#2 0x2b1731b7867b in __libc_message () from /lib/libc.so.6

#4 0x2b1731b8327c in free () from /lib/libc.so.6

And because the backtrace looked strange, here the valgrind output. Hope
this helps.

Choose one from:

It crashes with every file I tried so far, for example with
monday_1400_Debian.ogg. The files all play fine vlc.
