I also noticed that I have a "switch" for headphones in the volume
control. When I turn on the switch, sound is heard from the laptop
speakers and the headphones. When it is unchecked, it only sounds from
the laptop speakers. I imagine this is the headphone bug I've read about
somewhere. I am guess

Works for my laptop in Feisty. I have not tried it in Gutsy tribe 4. I
have noticed that the dial on the front of the laptop does control the
sound, but there isn't any granular contro
I can confirm that sound doesn't work for my Toshiba A135-S4527 in
current Feisty and Gutsy Tribe 4. I will test with an Edgy Live CD and
then attempt the fixes mentioned in the thread so far and report my
findings.

Edgy Eft, running Gutsy Gibbon now.

their fix was adding the following line to their
/etc/modprobe.d/alsabase file:
options snd-hda-intel position_fix=1 model=3stack
