Had the same problem. Here's a trick (in Precise):
Go to "System Settings", then "Appearance", and finally "Behavior". The
"Auto-Hide the Launcher" option is probably off (if not, just switch it off);
if so, switch it on again. Adjust the "Reveal Sensitivity" accordingly.
Usually, I put it on
Thanks Michał, but that doesn't seem to work in VMWare Fusion 4

With 12.04 the mechanism to show the dash changed. You now need to
"press" against the edge to show the laucher, which is only possible if
you disable mouse integration (i.e. have the cursor bound to the vm).

I'm experiencing the same after I updated my 12.04 LTS Beta using VMWare.
Launcher won't appear by moving the cursor to the edge.

If I use unity-3d in the host and unity-2d in the VM, pressing the super
key only makes the dash appear in the host.
With the mouse to the left, I saw the launcher briefly appear in unity-
2d but only immediately after logging in and it vanished almost
immediately.
I can't do anything in unity-2d

At least in U2D, that's 'cause we're monitoring for the Super key
globally, bypassing the window manager, which does not support 'holding'
shortcuts, which
In my testing, the Launcher does appear if the mouse is 1-2 pixels from
the left of the VirtualBox window. In Fullscreen mode, it works nicely
too.
When I press my Super key, *both* my host and VM launchers are summoned!

Ah. Perhaps it works in unity-3d but not unity-2d.

Yes, I'm using it in windowed mode.
The super key launches the _host_'s dash (rather than the launcher) - it
doesn't get passed through to the VM.

Hey Rocko,
are you using VirtualBox in fullscreen mode? If it is in windowed mode, the
edge-detection doesn't work properly.
Can you summon the Launcher with the Super key?
