Neil Padgett, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been

This affects me too. If it's going to happen on a particular boot, it
happens the first time I hit Enter on that boot. Or rather, the first
time I hit Enter that session (ie not when I type my password to log in
to Ubuntu).

those capabilities. It seems to happen randomly, although it's usually
within the first few minutes of a new boot. I then have to log out,
using ctrl+alt+delete, and then back in. This gets the touchpad
working, and it never

Please run evtest on a virtual terminal (ctrl+alt+f2), ala `sudo evtest
/dev/input/eventX`. If that shows events, then something in X (or
higher up the stack) has failed; if it shows no events then need to look
into the kernel.
