Doesn't look like it's fixed yet (unity 4.24.0 -- see below.)
It happens consistently when I try to open a log in gnome-system-log.

The strange behavior continues. I have a fully updated Ubuntu 11.10
here, and Compiz/Unity keeps on restarting with no apparent pattern.
A while ago, I was editing a document in LibreOffice - in the background
Firefox was running with just three tabs.
I opened gnome-calculator via Alt+f2 to do
@Dimitris, that probably had to do with the recent update disabling
apport.
