I used the guide here: http://wiki.compiz.org/Installation/Stable
Used 0.8.8 packages where available, or the newest 0.8.x where they are
not. You have to remove distro compiz-core and everything that depends
on it to do this, so obviously it breaks Unity.

Same problem with 12.04 64 XFCE, running Compiz.
None of the above workarounds worked for me.
This problem prevented me from playing any flash games that had saved
files, because it would ask for permission to save the file and hang
there. Even setting default to 10MB didn't solve problem.

In 10.04 and earlier compiz was enabled by default but could be toggled
on and off. You can either hit Alt-F2 and then enter metacity --replace
or you can install the compiz fusion icon (this may have been called
fusion-icon; it's been a long time since I was on 10.04.) This gives you
a little icon
The only option I have is "gnome failsafe" but not "Ubuntu Classic" (no
effects). I tried gnome failsafe but that didn't do anything.
