Public bug reported:

When using the 'alternate' CD to install feisty herd-4 to a partition,
the installation is ok, but after rebooting, the system halts. The
faillog and lastlog are the last files written but they contain al
zero's (binary zero's). I had the same problem with feisty herd-2.

faillog: 24024 bytes, all zero's
lastlog: 292292 bytes, all zero's
dmesg: 31 bytes: "(Nothing has been logged yet.)"

Feisty herd-4 was installed on hda7 (so that is a extended partition),
using Lilo (since grub failed during install). I installed Lilo in hda7,
since I use Gag as my boot manager. After installation I tried to boot
hda7 but during startup it halts. A few screens of messages have
scrolled and they seem okay, but after it halts there is no error
message displayed. Pressing 'enter' shows something like "(initramfs)",
but that differs when I tried to install once more. My guess is that the
problem might have to do with my chipset or has to do with the
filesystem.

The desktop LiveCD runs fine, but I was not able to install to hda7 from
the desktop CD, since the graphical installation program stops at 22%.
