Did you just install nm-applet? Usually you have to go into the System Administration Networking and disable the devices by clicking on them and hitting properties, then uncheck the enable this connection box. Log out then Log back in and it should detect them/take over controlling them. **

Thanks for your suggestion, it didn't work though. When I unticked (disabled) eth0 from System-Network-Connections, my /etc/network/interfaces was modified accordingly (auto eth0 was removed). Then I re-enabled eth0 (auto eth0 was added back), but NetworkManager Applet still refuses to find
