Bugs,
Connector shows 'Analog Speaker' and 'Analog headphones' on unplugging
and plugging the headphones, but when I checked in alsamixer, the volume
of the speaker is set to 0 and manually raising to 100% causes the
speaker audio to work normally.

But the Sound properties GUI shows 100% volume even when the volume of
the speaker gets set to 0 on unplugging the headphone.

Oops, looks like Youtube had issues with my .ogv file. Here is the
correct link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w2BU2E7ldPA. Even though
the speaker volume was 100% before connecting the headphones, it gets
set to 0 after disconnecting the headphones when it gets unmuted.

If you click the speaker icon (top right corner of screen), select Sound
Settings... then Output, what values of Connector are there?
Is the Connector changing automatically when you plug/unplug headphones, and
