I have the same problem. I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 and now I can't log on with my user. It doesn't matter if I choose Ubuntu, Ubuntu 2d or XFCE. Screen turns black for a second and returns to log on screen. Other users still work though. I attached ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/lightdm/
