I have the same problem. I upgraded from 11.04 to 11.10 and now I can't
log on with my user. It doesn't matter if I choose Ubuntu, Ubuntu 2d
or XFCE. Screen turns black for a second and returns to log on screen.
Other users still work though.
I attached ~/.xsession-errors and /var/log/lightdm/

At last I tried it very hard but it does not work to attach a file ?!

I had to downgrade my OS back to 11.04, therefore I cannot contribute to this
bug anymore.
If you cannot add the files in here, you can send them via email to
870...@bugs.launchpad.net,
or you could just reply to the notifications you receive into your email
account.

walldorf could you open a new bug using ubuntu-bug lightdm, it should
add some of the logs for you, your issue might also be a didferent one
