I'm using: Ubuntu GNOME Shell Remix 11.10
I have the same bug, but the workaround (getent passwd | grep >>
/etc/passwd) does not work.
Selecting the session: Classic Gnome works fine.

Gnome Shell login not working when authenticating against LDAP
