For me it for my own user session, and I don't know about unity --reset,
but sudo restart lightdm works, but after random execution times...
this is actually getting pretty ugly to live with...

Could you check if running the command unity --reset helps? Since it is
occurring in the guest session makes me feel like this is a user
configuration issue.
