I can confirm the same redraw issues with gnome-terminal using gnome- shell. It's difficult to capture as taking a screenshot seems to trigger a redraw. It only seems to happen when output would also trigger a scroll, but is not reliably reproducable so can't comfirm. I too am using non-free

Not sure if it is same, but am having scrolling glitches similar to this, with similar work-around (ie. refresh cures it) using Unity 3D. Problem goes away with Unity 2D. Problem manifests with all applications tried that produce scroll-able window, also Chrome and Firefox browsers. My system is

To be more precise, I've been having another scrolling problem on other applications. When scrolling on xterm and gnome editor with page up and page down, sometimes a rectangle inside the window is not redrawn. In xterm, that rectangle stays black and in gedit, the text is not correctly updated.
