Public bug reported:

It is not possible to change the brightness on my Samsung p560 Laptop.
The OSD shows up when using the brightness keys, but the brightness is not
changed. I am not sure which package this problem is in. I can only change the
brightness before booting ubuntu.

I have the Intel GMA4500 gpu, and this has been an issue since around 9.04.
There is some information in this bugreport:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/338182, which describes a
different issue.
And an old bugreport set as wont fix:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/338173
Sadly any nvidia tools will not help.

I currently have a clean install of:

Distributor ID: Ubuntu
Description: Ubuntu 11.10
Release: 11.10
Codename: oneiric

Kernel: 3.0.0-12-generic-pae #20-Ubuntu SMP Fri Oct 7 16:37:17 UTC 2011
i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
