Here's another clue, and a possible workaround.
If I do this:
"switch users" (which takes me to a login screen)
"suspend" (the button at the top right of the login screen)
... the system suspends ok.
I resume from suspend
I login again.
Now the session is restored correctly.

I'm using Oeneric, not Natty, and have all of the latest updates.
This is a system that was originally a Feisty install, and has been upgraded
sequentially without any major issues until now.
I just tried it again to make sure it's still happening, and it is.
Is there any logging or diagnostic
Are you using Natty? There was a known random logout issue with Natty,
but it was fixed with updates.
