They are the same sessions, except the default settings. The first time
you start a session, default settings are applied, which means that if
you want to switch between the two sessions and see some differences,
you have to reset your settings...

After trying the Xfce-session, the Xubuntu-session won't come up. I can
select Xubuntu-session, but after login it is still the Xfce-session. This
remains after several reboots.
I solved it for me to go to TTY with Ctrl+Alt+F1, and renamed .config/xfce4
in .config/xf
