Public bug reported: The problem occurred after switching users several times in succession, when logging back in to the original account. The screen showed a small strip of this accounts screen background, so the login had got as far as trying to display the screen background.
The syslog file contained several hundred thousand lines saying "Emergecy Thaw on sda5". I attach an edited version of syslog with most of these lines removed.
