I have the same problem - after booting up my laptop and logging into Ubuntu
11.10 the first thing I do is starting some programs. I don't keep them all in
the left pane, so I hit the super key and search for "firefox", "chromium" or
"amarok", but the apps are not shown, only the results of the

Looks like bug #856205 is about the alt+f2 behavior?
For example, I hit , type "ged", press and it opens the
first result of the file search instead of gedit (which gets opened if I
wait a bit longer before hitting ).
