garbled text when booting without splash screen

Seems to be a kernel issue.

Upon booting without splash screen (GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=), I
initially get blocks of white on my screen (all the time) instead of
text (please see attached picture). Towards the later part of the boot
process, I am able to get
