Public bug reported: I have been experiencing this bug since Natty, still present in Oneiric, but only reporting it now, a co-worker of mine was able to reproduce it as well.
On my Dell Latitude E6410, I move between work and home. In both locations, I have an external DVI monitor configured to the left of my primary monitor. Using xrandr or just the gnome displays tools, when I disable the DVI monitor, the monitor disables, but the laptop screen goes black. The mouse cursor is visible and I can use it to confirm that the dimensions of the desktop match the laptop screen. If I use gnome display, and let it time out after 30 seconds, it comes back. If I immediately disable it a second time, it works and the laptop correctly shows the desktop. This happens with both of my external LCDs and is 100% reproducible. 1) boot with ext monitor 2) disable monitor (blank screen) 3) disable again, works 4) put laptop into standby 5) connect at work to LCD 6) disable LD, blank screen results 7) disable again, works 2nd time. This is very frustrating, and if you use xrandr, where there is no 30 second delay you then have to go to a tty to restart unity to fix the issue.
