This happens on my Asus A53Z as well... I have never successfully
awaken from suspend. (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS)

my former comment is totally wrong. sleep and hibernation work on 10.04
and 10.10 when the proprietary drivers are not activated (and the video
quality is really bad), but this walkaround does not work on 11.04 and
so i suppose it won't work on 11.10 either.
