I've reopened this and assigned it to the nv driver. Whilst it was fixed
in the proprietary nvidia driver, the bug makes nv use with the card
almost impossible.

the problem.
Fixed a problem causing the fan on some GPUs to always run at full speed.

I have to correct myself! This is NOT the cpu fan, it is the fan of the
nvidia geforce 7900GS which is making the noise.
I am using the 'nv' driver.

The proprietary 'nvidia' driver fixes this. So I suppose this should be
reported
as a bug in the nv driver?
