Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

After upgrade I got an error

Fatal error
could not open default font 'fixed'.

/etc/X11/xorg.conf was same as before (aka I did not edit it, the
installation did not change it)

After adding:
        FontPath "/usr/share/fonts/X11/misc"

to the "Files" section, it started successfully.

The other pointers:
        FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/cyrillic"
        FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/100dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/75dpi/:unscaled"
        FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/Type1"
        FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/100dpi"
        FontPath "/usr/share/X11/fonts/75dpi"

DO NOT point to either font files, nor to any font declaration (alias)
files.

I did not go into detail as to how the X-server addresses fonts, but the
configuration files can be found in 3 (THREE) different places. However,
changing the version in /etc/X11 fixes the problem.

Does the X-Server hardcode the font paths?

I suggest fixing this issue within Ubuntu and redirecting it to Xorg for
permanent fixing.
