because I had already done that (I partitioned and formatted everything
before going into the Installer). I got things working by executing sudo

The fix in the blog you refer to is incorrect; instead, upgrade to
ubiquity 1.2.6 in the edgy-proposed repository before starting the
installation. In particular, nobbling the validation meant that you
weren't informed about the fact that you need to reformat the root
filesystem.
