This extension.sqlite is from a newly updated Thunderbird 9.0 that shows
the same problems.
Please note that I read this bug report after fiddling a bit with the
configuration. I also used the Reset all add ons to update
automatically button.

And https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightning-

worked

Can someone commit a fix to this? By changing the min-version for
thunderbird to 8.0 from 8.0a, it works now like a charm.

@Chris Coulson Would it be valid to do that procedure on a Live CD? If
that won't do it I can try to reproduce it on a virtual machine.

So many different ways to fix the same problem. I just changed the max
version von Sunbird and Lightning to the unrealistic value of 2 in the
file
/usr/share/xul-ext/gdata-provider/install.rdf
em:maxVersion2.0/em:maxVersion
Anyway, it is now working again.

How does the issue with the Sunbird stanza affect Thunderbird? The
version compatibility check doesn't even look at that.
Could somebody who can recreate this issue on upgrade please send me
their extensions.sqlite *immediately* after getting the problem.

Also note that the requires section of the install.rdf is ignored
anyway

It's possible that this is caused by some weird interraction with the

I didn't try the proposed patch, but I did try a different change in the
install.rdf that does work. In the targetApplication/Thunderbird
section, I changed minVersion from 8.0a1 to 8.0 and the extension was
loaded the next time I started Thunderbird.

The patch doesn't actually fix any problem though. Applying it just
updates the addon folder mtime, which tricks the addon manager in to
thinking you updated the addon and causes it to refresh the addon
metadata in its DB from disk (thus, giving the illusion that you fixed
the compatibility

I can confirm this.
Just updated Thunderbird (and saw that also the google provider plugin
was updated).
Why is this not working?
Those packages has been updated and pushed to the official repository. Things
should not break so easly

I figured out what's wrong. install.rdf is listing a minVersion
maxVersion for sunbird and lightning in its install.rdf. Attached is a
patch that'll fix this if you patch /usr/share/xul-ext/gdata-
provider/install.rdf with it.
** Patch added: install.rdf.patch
