This may be similar to bug 727658, but is behaving a little differently.
There seem to be a couple of specific applications that will not display
a window unless started from a terminal.   pidgin and update manager are
two of the ones I have found.    I can try to start them from the menu
bar, the unity launcher, or the application launcher.   The icon will
appear in the unity launcher and bobble and an arrow will appear next to
the icon, but no window will ever display.    If I switch to unbuntu 2d,
things behave correctly.  If a terminal is opened and the application
started from there, it's window will be displayed.
