All of a sudden, sound is not working. I can hear a "crack" from the speakers 
when starting aplay from the terminal.
rhythmbox "plays" files twice or thrice the speed, with no sound

have done no configuration changes (except for routine upgrades - and
considering that update manager wants me to download 63MB of updates
ATM, even that hasn't been done in a while). Sound worked 2 days ago.
nothing changed AFAIK since.
