I think even more understandable than equilateral triangles would be
right-angled triangles of sorted lines:

for descending. But other than that, absolutely, just flipping the current
arrows would be less confusing.

My take on this (and having read the GNOME bug report), is that the
fattest (largest) quantity should correspond to the fattest end of the
triangle.
