I can confirm the same behavior on an HP/Compaq nc6220, again using
Intel i915 video.
The password field issues are an inconvenience at most but the SERIOUS
problem is the terminal window suffers from the same problem - terminal
windows open before turning on desktop effects are ok but any

After some searching I found a post specifically talking about compiz on
the i915... Add this option to your Xorg.conf in the Device section for
your Intel video card:
Option XAANoOffscreenPixmaps
Seems to have fixed issues for me - terminal windows now draw properly,
password fields now
I forgot to mention that this is on Acer travelmate 4150 laptop, intel
915 video card.
