the workaround is tu run:
gksu-properties
and then change authentication mode to sudo.

I have the same problem with feisty. This seems pretty serious since
you can't install updates unless you drop to the commandline. The
dialog is also different from the dialog I'm used to seeing. I don't
know when it changed exactly, but ever since the appearance of the

The passwords don't have any special characters in them. This is
actually worse than the older bug (#14122) since gksu doesn't recognize
regular character passwords. The older gksu didn't have this problem it
seems to have been introduced but the newer gksu. I can't access
synaptic, update-manager

It is possible that something went wrong with gconf here.
