I think it was introduced with the update from 2.6 to 3.0, but seems to
be gone with 12.04 and kernel version 3.2 now.

Yeah, true. Still after applying current updates, this has not changed. I
think it stared with the last mayer upgrade. Former releases did not had this
problem.
The hardware still frequently resets and wlan connection gets lost, while using
it and then reconnects to the AP.
