This screenshot is what it should use IMHO. However this is outside the
scope for this bug. I would like a little feedback before filing a bug
on it (or changing this one. This is using a .deb file i have in $HOME,
as i recall its the same for PDF and files from email that you download.

Choosing Purple IRC Handler does nothing. However i only have Pidion and
IRSSI installed. I think it should use something by giving the the user
a choice dialog that you get when you try to open a file. It uses
package names to open with. I dont think user should have to look for a
package to open

I am not entirely convinced that the bug (spawning lots of tabs) is a
Firefox bug, but there is a related bug in the Mozilla bugzilla for
handling irc:// protocol links in Firefox (in a nutshell: you can
configure the behavior with an about:config seting). I have added that
upstream bug to the list
I have limited opportunities to explore variations on my system at the
moment, but I've been asking around. One said he didn't get lots of
Firefox windows or tabs, but quite a few gnome-open processes.

I opened the link here in firefox and got the pop up dialog asking what
app i wanted to use to launch it. and it does nothing the page doesnt
display nothing else opens nothing crashes. What happens if you use
konqueror instead of firefox? I dont think this is a firefox related

Actually, I don't think this is a Firefox bug as such. I've tried it on
other systems, and none have this problem. I think it might be xchat-
remote that has the problem, but I'm unable to confirm that at the
moment.
