I performed the commands Dave suggested, rebooted, ran Update Manager,
and the errors and lingering gnome-settings-daemon update are gone. I
assume problem SOLVED. Ubuntu has an awesome community, with members

This usually means your local copy of the .deb is corrupt. Try deleting
it and then do the upgrade again:
sudo rm /var/cache/apt/archives/gnome-settings-daemon_3.2.2-0ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade --fix-missing
