The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.

I'm wondering if this has more to do with the ati_remote attached to the
system. Lots of messages from the device, could be confusing things. You
could try doing this:
echo blacklist ati_remote2 | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/myblacklist
sudo update-initramfs -u

I can try that, but I actually have been having other issues since then.
Currently, the only way to get X11 to work is to run under recovery mode
then run init 5. Otherwise, after a long loading time, it goes to what
apears to be a blank terminal with only a blinking cursor(The _ style).
