I confirm that removing the new dns=dnsmasq line from
/etc/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.conf makes the connection work again.

Well, shucks. More fixing up for this will be required ;)
Could you please confirm whether that was always with openvpn? We've
been testing precise the VPN cases, it seemed to work, so if we're
seeing crashes now we really should be getting both an apport crash, and
we should have caught it
