I now marked this as duplicate, it seems the real bug is with EXA, which
is not enabled by default.

[r300] ati driver unuasble slow (full cpu usage just for drawing gtk apps)
--
Xorg radeon
My experience on Radeon X800 is, that forget all the rest of the
options, but do _enable_ Option XAANoOffscreenPixmaps true. I
think dri really does nothing, RenderAccel might affect some things
negatively but probably does nothing, and AccelMethod EXA definitely
breaks things.
In default
I turned EXA off and it seems to work better when I don't use desktop effects.
But desktop effects (compiz?) is really buggy. Window contents not being drawn,
etc, etc.
So this is an upstream driver bug?
I've used Beryl on Edgy with better perfomance..

Xorg radeon driver is slower in
OK, with window contents not being drawn with window effects, you must turn one
option off.
I think it's that:
Option XAANoOffscreenPixmaps true
If it's not the one, let me know and I'll find it.
Otherwise, it's also known that window contents are drawn slower with desktop
effects than
i also have a radeon and no problems with X in feisty. However once I tried EXA
and I did experience such problems.
I recommend turning off EXA and the problem should be fixed.
Can you turn off EXA in the xorg.conf and check if that solves the
problem? marking the bug need info in the meantime.
Another effect.
