Yes, this happened with me too. I disabled guest session to try if I can
somehow else get the icon back - clicking on it's place or something -
but it doesn't work. So if you're the only user and you don't allow
guest session you can only log into the default session.

small note about the current behavior & the proposed fix, ( which does work
fine here, cog shows on initial login
After choosing a session from the menu the cursor disappears from the password
box.
Similar to what happened for a bit during, iirc, 11.10 dev
