thomerz, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com

The duplicate status is wrong. Bug #206864 indicates that the WORKAROUND
to this bug no longer works. Since this bug was filed long before, bug
#206864 should be marked as the duplicate of bug #93067. Why is t

This seems be a duplicate of bug 206864 so I am marking it as such.
There is a workaround mentioned in comment 14 of that report -

.
Experiencing the same thing under 8.10 beta. Was able to work around
under feisty with the cstate solution - no longer available. Noise was
present in Gutsy, but to a lesser extent. Now, under Ibex, the volume
of the noise seems higher.
2.6.27-4-generic #1 SMP Wed Sep 24 01:29:06 UTC 2008 x86_6
This issue is still apparent in Alpha5, linux-image-2.6.27-2-generic on
x86_64. Let me know if there is more information I can provide.

The Ubuntu Kernel Team is planning to move to the 2.6.27 kernel for the
upcoming Intrepid Ibex 8.10 release. As a result, the kernel team would
appreciate it if you could please test this newer 2.6.27 Ubuntu kernel.
There are one of two ways you should be able to test:

I wonder if this is covered under warranty. Seems like its an issue with
the hardware. Anyone have any experience with complaints along these
lines? I dont notice this when using Windows. Maybe its not using all
the acpi power modes.

I'm having this too, on a toshiba with an intel t7400 processor.
# echo 2 > /sys/module/processor/parameters/max_cstate solved it for me.

I encounter this bug, too.
# echo 2 > /sys/module/processor/parameters/max_cstate worked for me, but it
also reduces my battery life. Is this bug on the schedule to be fixed soon?

I can confirm this bug on my Lenovo 3000 n100 (core duo).
This is with feisty and kernel 2.6.20-15. This did not happen in edgy.
What happened between the two releases that this problem has shown up
again. Reading previous bug reports it seemed like this problem occurred
in dapper but was fixed?
Today I noticed that on my Thinkpad the noise is only there if I disable
bluetooth, either with the hardware swith or # echo disable >
/proc/acpi/ibm/bluetooth. However this seems not to help on other
notebooks.
