Hi! This is on up-to-date Ubuntu Feisty, on a Dell Latitude D620 laptop;
it has an intel 9xx integrated graphics board.
I set the laptop to turn off the screen when I close the lid (I leave it
turned on most of the time). For some reason, sometimes the screen
remains dark

The only thing I can do is reboot the machine.
Does your machine have a key to cycle between displays,
e.g., LCD, external monitor, both, and back to LCD?
