The problems I had with the 295.20 and Gnome SHell were resolved with
the 295.33 update. The NVIDIA Linux forum presently contains only two
bug reports, one about an error in the driver installation script, which
probably doesn't concern us because we install the drivers using a
package manager,
Confirmed. Gnome-Shell issue is resolved in the 295.33 driver. I'm
curious if the issues reported by Jeff Gosden are also fixed.

[x-updates] Nvidia 295.20
I too had a very unstable lucid 10.04.4LTS system since the upgrade of
the Nvidia drivers to 295.20 from the X-Update PPA.
My issues included:
1. Occasional system hangs, with frozen screen with the mouse movement
still responding.
2. GL Screensaver activating = occasional hang
3. Compiz
Sorry, I forgot to mention the video card:
GeForce 8600M GT
BTW I also experienced the 4-pixel sized random black dots occasional
screen corruption with the 295.20 driver as reported by a few people
now.
