So it is no bug. There are two types of shell, login (from a tty) and
non-login (from x, so gnome-terminal, xterm and other emulators). Login
looks to .profile, .bash_profile or .bash_login and sources those files
whereas non-login sources .bashrc (it is more complicated, actually,see
the man page)
Seems to be a bug in package shadow, to which command /bin/login
belongs. New steps to reproduce is to run `sudo login` and then login.

I am attaching my .bashrc (note that I have changed only its last 15
lines or so, the rests is default ubuntu). This bug manifests itself
only if the size of bash history is set over 500, and maybe the way the
