Seems we still suffer from Bug #131311, so there is no chance to
download the Live CD for testing purposes...

The patch in comment #4 no longer applies to current -ati source
(6.8.0). If someone could provide and test an updated patch, it could
possibly be included. Probably this should be reported upstream
however.

No go on my Live CD. "Live", "Live Video=ofonly", Live-Powerpc64",
Live-nosplash-powerpc64" and Live-powerpc64 video=ofonly" go as far
as prom-init and stop. Apparently some kernel panic is killing the
boot up.
Sorry, that's as far as my experience will take me.

I'm downloading 7.10 Daily now. I'll burn a cd and try it Live and
then an install. Will repost with results.

Last I tried, it worked on my rv350 based powerbook, though a test on a
n X800 based G5 would be useful too.

Can't find the 7.10beta. Do you have a link?
I have never been successful installing any linux (or BSD for that
matter) on my G5. I have an ATI X800 XT installed in my box and I'm
guessing that is my problem.

Does ppc work now out-of-the-box? Please try 7.10beta or a daily live-

As-is, the X.org x86emu doesn't work properly on pretty much all ppc
machines. That's why the normal int10 soft-boot path is #if
!defined(__powerpc__) already in the driver. It seems like ubuntu
applied a patch to X.org ATI driver that causes it to use VBE for EDID

I've hit this problem as well on a G5 with Radeon, in Feisty final.
Driver package version is 6.6.3-2ubuntu6.
With Ben Herrenschmidt's help, tracked the problem down to an Ubuntu
patch which adds some VBE based DDC probing code to the driver as a
fallback. That gets triggered on powerpc, and VBE
Downgrading xserver-xorg-video-ati from 1:6.6.3-2ubuntu3 to
1:6.6.2-0ubuntu6 solves the problem.

Kernel bug ?
I've tried the video=ofonly option and I surely can start X with the ati
driver this way (though only in 680x480 only and no compiz).
But :
- my kernel for now is 2.6.20-12-powerpc64-smp
- I've just tried to boot with 2.6.20-9 (herd5 kernel) (and after 2.6.20-11),
the ati xorg d
This may be a duplicate of Bug #93271. I reported the bug against the
kernel as I can successfully load the ATI driver (although still with
errors) and start X by using the 'video=ofonly' kernel parameter.
