As-is, the X.org x86emu doesn't work properly on pretty much all ppc machines. That's why the normal int10 soft-boot path is #if !defined(__powerpc__) already in the driver. I've hit this problem as well on a G5 with Radeon, in Feisty final. Driver package version is 6.6.3-2ubuntu6. With Ben Herrenschmidt's help, tracked the problem down to an Ubuntu patch which adds some VBE based DDC probing code to the driver as a fallback. That gets triggered on powerpc, and VBE
