This probably means that the installation of grub during the upgrade did not
behave exactly in the same way as this very last install.

Do you have a separate /boot? If so can you run grub-probe -t partman
/boot?
If not, then can you try reinstalling grub without the --modules switch
again? If grub-probe detects the msdos partition table, then it should
build in the module automatically.
