device manager, i get the message 'our hardware does not need any
restricted drivers.'.
lsmod | grep fglrx outputs nothing.

A-h! Now this would explain the issue. Can you please attach
/var/log/kern.log after doing this? What does
sudo modprobe -v fglrx
