John Perry, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com

** Description changed:
I am trying the Ubuntu Daily ISO (20/2/2012) and I notice that the WiFi is
not working.
Upon inspection, rfkill reports:

Soft blocked: yes
Hard blocked: no
1: sony-wifi: Wireless LAN
Soft blocked: no
Hard blocked: no
The bug still exists with kernel 3.2.0-24, so I change the status back
to confirmed. Blacklisting acer_wmi indeed does the trick. However, as
Simos wrote, it's rather a workaround than a solution.

Indeed, if you add the acer-wmi kernel module into the blacklist, then
the WiFi works.
However, adding the module to the blacklist is not a solution but rather a
workaround.
We do not expect users of these laptops to figure out they have to edit
configuration files.

Hi,
I'm not an expert at all, but I solved wifi issue on my vaio by adding
the acer driver to blacklist. You can find more details following the

Hi
I have the same problem as described above. I'm running the 12.04 Beta 2
with the 3.2.0-20-generic kernel on a Sony VPCY2 laptop. The problem is
still present, so I changed the bug status to Confirmed.
I'm an intermediate user, maybe I can help with some more testing.

Changing back to confirmed. The latest update did not solve the issue.
acer-wmi.ko is still loaded automatically and soft-blocks the WiFi interface.
(I am advanced user, feel free to ask me to do things to test out).

Neither /sys/class/leds, /sys/class/backlight have an entry related to
acer-wmi.
Specifically,
$ ls -l /sys/class/leds/

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 0 Φεβ 23 20:29 ath9k-phy0 ->
../../devices/pci:00/:00:06.0/:03:00.0/leds/ath9k-phy0
$ ls -l /sys/class/backlight/

Your machine does support some of the interfaces that acer-wmi uses, so
it's probably worthwhile to check whether or not acer-wmi is doing
anything useful. Check the following paths and see if anything with acer
in the name shows up.
/sys/class/leds
/sys/class/backlight

I did not try older versions of Ubuntu so I do not know whether older
versions have the issue. I am happy to try older versions out.
Which Ubuntu versions shall I go for?

Do you happen to know if acer-wmi.ko was loaded in previous versions of
Ubuntu, or is this new with 12.04?
