Although I still get frequent kernel panics on boot(which can be worked
around by going into recovery then continuing), they don't seem to be
related to this bug.

Bayan Rafeh, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any
activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? If
so, could you please test for this with the latest development release
of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com
/daily-live/cur
I solved it by simply going to the recovery, entering the root prompt
and typing reboot. But it's still a serious issue and we should not be
working around it.

Problem solved! I'm not sure why, but GRUB was installed in the pendrive
and not in the hardisk. I have ejecuted grub-install /dev/sda and now
boot perfectly :)

I have the same problem with my Pavilion dv6. Debian Testing (Wheezy)
kernel works without problems, but Ubuntu 12.04 hangs on boot with a
black screen and a blinking cursor. The same problem with the two (or
three) previous Ubuntu releases :(

I'm downloading the mainline kernel now for testing and will post
results today and tomorrow but I wouldn't hold my breath, I have had
this problem since natty. I'm reporting it now because I found the log
file with the call traces yesterday.
