same problem, I am running Feisty on Intel Core Due (Dell Optiplex 745).
I have also tried ubuntu-7.04-desktop-amd64.iso

I'm having a similar problem, but it has nothing to do with the OS I try
to boot, e.g. with no cdrom and a just created (blank) virtual disk:

I have (nearly) the same problem on an amd64 machine. I do not get a
crash but the vm is hanging exactly at the point where the boot loader
should be displayed. Running the image with qemu works, running not
ubuntu images (e.g knoppix) works, too.

Confirmed on Core Duo T2300.
According to the kvm mailing list, this is because Intel VT doesn't have
realmode virtualization, and the bootsplash is what's triggering the
exception.
