I'm having the same problem. This is just after three days of failure to
get past crash(es) while reinstalling11.10; crashes occurred during
attempted installation of English language package, and in fact the same
error message seen at the bottom of this conservation is Germain. There
are 301
Since I can't download any updates it doesn't appear a way to obtain an
upgrade solving the problem. There is a Bug on SF that is related.
Can't locate it again.

I saw a question asked, If someone was trying to upgrade. I was trying
to upgrade to U 12.04 with an ISO obtained from Ubuntu's site and
created at slowest burn speed. Error messages above, my post, applies.
After repeated failures, I am now trying to return to Ubuntu 11.10.

I'm afraid you don't provide enough information for us to make anything
useful out of this bug report. Please provide log files of the failure
(/var/log/apt/*) and/or a paste of the failed updates. Also dpkg does
not have a installArchives() function. I guess it's update-manager...
so reassigning
