I have the same problem on one Ubuntu host (feisty), which was upgraded
from Egdy. There were some locale problems for some time ago, so it may
be causing this.
$sudo dpkg --configure -a
$ ls -l /usr/bin/python
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 9 2007-04-27 08:34 /usr/bin/python - python2.5
$ sudo

Can you please run the following commands and attach the output here:
$ sudo dpkg --configure -a
and
$ ls -l /usr/bin/python
and
$ sudo pycentral -v pkginstall language-selector
Does it work after you typed those commands?

I am having the exact same problem with the exact same error message. I
am using version 0.2.5 of language-selector and I'm attaching my
crashfile as well.
