I have a Dell Inspiron 6400 with an ATI Radeon X1300. The biggest
problem I had was that the VESA driver could not find a resolution for
the display. I ended up using the Feisty alternate CD image to at least
get a prompt. Then I installed the ATI fglrx drivers.
sudo apt-get install xorg-driver-fg
Tried kernel 2.6.20.14-generic.
Same problem.
Boot stops at [4.xxx] (and I still don't know where to find the info after an
unsuccessful boot), in dmesg there are only the results of startup with kernel
2.6.20-9-generic and that works.

No startup with kernel
More JMicron fixes are being uploaded over the weekend. Please try the
daily ISO again on Monday. The kernel must be at least 2.6.20-14.

The Inspiron 6400 has a JMicron IDE controller for which there is a
critical fix in 2.6.20-13. Try the Feisty daily build ISO:
